“Neutralized” 32 PKK fighters in northern Iraq

On May 3, 2024, the Turkish Ministry of Defense announced that 32 members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) were “neutralized” in operations in various areas of northern Iraq.

According to the announcement, these operations once morest PKK rebels took place in Haftanin, Gara and Harkuk regions of the north Iraq.

Turkish cross-border attacks in northern Iraq have been a source of tension with Baghdad for many years.

According to the newsit, Ankara is asking for more cooperation from Iraq in dealing with Kurdish rebels, and Baghdad in March labeled the PKK a “prohibited organization”.

Last month the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan held talks with Iraqi officials in Baghdad and Arbil regarding the PKK’s continued presence in northern Iraq, as well as other issues. He later said he believed Iraq recognized that neutralizing the PKK was necessary.
