Neurosurgeons perform first Parkinson’s surgery with deep brain stimulator

Asunción, IP Agency.- This surgery, performed for the first time in the country, was carried out at the Central Hospital of the Institute of Social Security and the beneficiary is a 67-year-old adult patient, with 12 years of evolution of Parkinson’s disease with trembling characteristics, with greater predominance of the right side.

The patient operated on is from the central area, she was dedicated to quality control of medical supplies, she is a person with high intellectual performance who always remained active at work and in recent years, she could no longer due to this pathology.

At the IPS there is a history that in the 90s about 3 or 4 Parkinson’s surgeries had been performed, but then none were performed again until the one performed, with the placement of a deep brain stimulator for this disease that is part of of pathologies, with movement disorders.

The medical authorities explain that the aforementioned surgery was performed in two stages. In the first stage, the electrodes were placed at the brain level while the patient was awake; Certain areas of the brain are stimulated with electrodes to demonstrate the effectiveness of the surgery, which must reduce the tremor and rigidity that affects him, mentioned Dr. Oscar Servín, head of the Neurosurgery Service at the Central Hospital.

Once the exact location is confirmed, the patient is induced under general anesthesia, she is intubated and the pacemaker is placed under the skin at the level of the chest and the connectors are passed under the skin to the battery.

With this innovative procedure, the patient’s quality of life has a significant improvement, because she is once again independent for food, personal hygiene, clothing, and for daily activities such as brushing her teeth, which she could no longer do on her own due to the tremors. She can even reactivate her work life again.

The neurosurgeon mentioned that in the immediate postoperative period the patient is referred to the Intensive Care Unit, for about 6 to 8 hours, a control tomography is performed and after that she goes to a common hospitalization room where she is monitored for 24 hours. and later he goes home.

Five patients diagnosed with Parkinson’s

On the other hand, the IPS confirms that it has a list of 5 patients with Parkinson’s disease with surgical indication; in addition to 3 others who suffer from a pathology called cervical dystonia, which is a significant cervical contracture.

Those affected no longer respond to medical treatment or Botox, which is used to relax these muscles, which is why the placement of the same device is indicated to improve their quality of life, said Dr. Servín, head of Neurosurgery at the Central Hospital of the IP.
