LR Schleritzko: Best possible care for patients

St.Pölten (OTS) – The neurological department at the Amstetten State Hospital is celebrating its 20th anniversary. For the 100th anniversary of the state hospital in September 2003, the neurology department was opened as a regional center for modern acute stroke care.

“With the renovation work on the stroke unit at the Amstetten State Hospital, we want to ensure that our patients continue to receive the best possible care. At the same time, we have created the best conditions for our employees. We will also increase the number of beds by two,” explains State Councilor Ludwig Schleritzko and congratulates on the 20th anniversary.

Originally, in 2003, the neurology department was primarily aimed at treating stroke patients with a stroke unit. Hardly any other discipline in medicine has experienced such a change in diagnostics and therapy in recent years as neurology. What should be highlighted here are the new options in stroke treatment, which can also be offered to those affected in Amstetten. Due to demographic developments, especially the age structure, diseases of the nervous system are becoming more and more common, so that their professional treatment is becoming more and more essential. In addition to circulatory disorders in the brain, therapeutic efforts also focus on inflammation of the nervous system and dementia.

A multiprofessional team is necessary to care for neurological patients. This consists of specialists in neurology, physiotherapists and occupational therapists, speech therapists and nursing staff who work hand in hand. They look after around 2,200 patients in Amstetten every year, around 700 of whom are in the stroke unit and around 450 with a diagnosis of stroke.

Primaria DDr. Susanne Asenbaum-Nan emphasizes: “Our well-coordinated multidisciplinary team and our expertise directly benefit our patients. The development of neurology with the establishment of new therapy options and the associated treatment successes are a constant motivation for us not to let up in our efforts.”

Due to the increasing number of patients, expansion work is currently underway in the stroke unit in order to continue to provide patients with the best care after acute neurological events in the future. During the renovation work, the number of monitoring beds in the stroke unit will be increased by a total of two in order to be able to care for additional patients requiring monitoring and requiring intensive care in the early phase of acute neurological diseases such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, etc. Completion is scheduled for the end of March 2024.
