“This is the result of the amazing work the Neuralink team has done in close collaboration with the US Food and Drug Administration and represents an important first step that will one day allow our technology to help many more people,” the company wrote on Twitter. Neuralink said it was “not open yet” for applications for this clinical trial.

The Food and Drug Administration has not commented on the trial. The scope of the approved trial is not yet known. Neuralink was founded in 2016 with seed funding from Musk to develop a new type of interface technology between the human brain and computers.

The company says that installing a chip in the human skull can restore limb function, improve human movement, solve vision and hearing problems, and help treat diseases such as Parkinson’s disease.
