“With four mayoral candidates, a runoff election is of course to be expected,” says Mayor Adi Rieger from the ÖVP.

Mayor Adi Rieger is calm: “We will only decide on our list at the municipal party conference on December 14th, but what is certain is that I will run for election once more. With four mayoral candidates, a runoff election is of course to be expected, even if I would of course prefer it otherwise.” said the 55-year-old incumbent. The ÖVP holds the absolute majority in the local council with 13 mandates. Mayor Rieger: “We want to work well for Neumarkt and do well in the election. We won’t start the actual election campaign until mid-January.” He picked up a lot of ideas and suggestions from Neumarkt residents from local discussions. The next big project in Neumarkt is the realization of the sports and leisure center, for which the architectural competition will be announced in 2024. The spatial development concept (REK) must be finalized in 2024. Another big issue is the expansion of the park-and-ride area at the train station, for which the ÖBB and the state are responsible.

Rieger also wants to minimize the influx. “Childcare and schools are now up to date, that’s fine now.” The “House of Clubs” is nearing completion and is scheduled to officially open in February. In general there is good cooperation with all factions.

SPÖ sees itself as a “control party”

Vice Mayor David Egger also sees it this way: “Nine out of ten topics are decided unanimously. But we as the SPÖ see ourselves as a controlling party that asks questions regarding where the public’s money goes. The Neumarkt budget is already extremely burdened.” After five years of an absolute ÖVP majority, the time is ripe for him to make a change. “I am regularly out and regarding in Neumarkt. The people encourage me to run for office,” said Egger. “It’s often the little things that bother people; Neumarkt can certainly be made more beautiful and charming.” He is in favor of a meeting area in front of the municipal office. “For this purpose, additional parking spaces can be created in the Rinnerthaler parking lot.” A parking garage at Neumarkt train station is also urgently needed.

“We as the SPÖ see ourselves as a controlling party that asks questions regarding where the public’s money goes,” says Deputy Mayor David Egger from the SPÖ.

“We as the SPÖ see ourselves as a controlling party that asks questions regarding where the public’s money goes,” says Deputy Mayor David Egger from the SPÖ.

The implementation of the new sports and leisure facility is taking far too long for him. “We urgently need an exercise park, Neumarkt has nothing to offer here, and the renovation of the middle school gymnasium is constantly being postponed.” Egger categorically rejects the sale of public beach areas for a hotel project.

FPÖ hopes for five mandates once more

David Pölzleitner, the current parliamentary group leader for the Neumarkt FPÖ, is running in the mayoral election. Second place on the list goes to community representative Herbert Lettner, and substitute community representative Michael Moosleitner will be in third place. The other places on the list will be determined in the next few weeks. While the opponents in the mayoral election are “a bit overpowering”, Pölzleitner expects a significant increase in the local council election and is hoping for five mandates. “The FPÖ has always been strong in Neumarkt – on par with the SPÖ and within striking distance of the ÖVP. Unfortunately, Ibiza really hurt us in the 2019 election.”

The party is feeling a tailwind from its participation in government at the state level. A central issue in the Blues’ election campaign will be affordable housing. He wants to expand the premium model for parents who look following their children at home during the first three years of life.

Greens are aiming for a seat on the city council

Local group spokesman Christoph Harringer will enter the race for mayor for the Greens. District spokeswoman Bernadette Riesner will be first on the list in the local council election. The currently only green municipal representative, Alois Auinger, receives third place on the list. “We are hoping for three mandates, which would mean one seat on the city council,” says Harringer.

He wants to score points with the topics of spatial planning, affordable housing and energy. The new spatial development concept that is being developed is “one big drama”. Affordable housing is needed for young people. When it comes to energy, the Renewable Energy Community has been set up and is supporting the wind farm on Lehmberg. “We want to convince people who didn’t vote last time or didn’t notice us.” Harringer primarily criticizes the Neumarkt SPÖ. “They are in a constant state of deep sleep. Things are decided on there that you don’t want to know regarding later.” Neumarkt am Wallersee in numbers:
