Netherlands steps up ban on chip exports to China – ICT News

Following talks with the United States, the Netherlands and Japan would now enforce a broader export ban on chips and chip machines. These can no longer be exported to China. The measure seems to mainly affect the manufacturer of ASML chip machines.

This is what the Bloomberg news agency reveals. After discussing it with US authorities, the Netherlands reportedly promised to block the export of ASML’s most modern chip machines to China. These are EUV machines using immersion lithography and making it possible to manufacture particularly powerful and compact chips. According to Bloomberg, the United States also wanted to ban the export of old DUV machines, many of which are now already in China. Dutch Prime Minister Rutte has already said that they do not wish to comment publicly on these talks and what exactly was signed, as the content would be too sensitive.

The Dutch firm ASML is one of the world’s largest suppliers of machines for manufacturing new chips. As such, ASML – and its home country – assumes a key role in attempts by Americans and others to prevent sophisticated chips from ending up in China. For several years now, the United States and China have maintained strained relations. In addition to the Netherlands, Japan also reportedly promised last week to limit its chip exports to China.
