Several dozen other injured people are being treated at the scene of the accident, the security forces said.
Prime Minister Mark Rutte spoke in a first reaction of a “terrible train accident”. “My thoughts are with the relatives and with all the victims. I wish them strength,” he wrote on Twitter.
Construction equipment on the tracks
The accident happened around 3:25 a.m. on the route from Leiden to The Hague near Voorschoten. The cause was initially unclear. According to eyewitnesses, a freight train and a passenger train hit a construction crane. According to the fire brigade and the railway, the passenger train derailed. Some cars had overturned.
According to a spokesman for the safety region Hollands Midden, construction equipment on the route might have been the cause of the accident. “The emergency services were quickly on site,” said a spokesman for the Dutch train company NS, who speaks of a major accident. “Our first concern is the people on the train, the passengers and our colleagues.” Around ten passengers were picked up by local residents. It is a very busy route from Amsterdam to The Hague.
