One of the special polling stations in the general election in the Netherlands is the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. Eligible voters can cast their votes there for the first time on Wednesday. The Anne Frank House wants to draw attention to the fact that “freedom, equal rights and democracy” are important. “The Anne Frank House is one of the places that reminds us of what can happen when democracy and law collapse,” said the Anne Frank Foundation.

The Jewish girl and her family lived in the house on Prinsengracht in the capital for regarding two years in hiding from the German National Socialists during the Second World War. She wrote her world-famous diary there. Anne and the other residents of the secret annex were deported to concentration camps in 1944. Anne died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945 at the age of 15. “How wonderful it is that no one has to wait a minute to change the world.”

All voters receive a red crayon with a quote from Anne Frank: “How wonderful it is that no one has to wait a minute to change the world.” The Dutch traditionally vote with a red crayon. The museum is closed to other visitors on this day. Due to the tensions resulting from the Middle East conflict, security precautions at the museum have been increased.
