The music had to reflect the constant pressure in McGuire Medical Center. It needed to elevate the drama without being overly intrusive. The goal was to become another character in the narrative.

Torrin Borrowdale: It was a collaborative process, a true partnership with the music supervisors. We wanted the licensed music to reflect Miami’s vibrant culture. My job was to build the bridges, to support the emotional moments in the show, so it didn’t become jarring. I created underscore that coudl either amplify or, in some cases, provide moments of contrast. The intention was to enhance the audience experience.

Balancing Tension and Emotion

Archyde News: With the show’s fast-paced setting, how did you balance creating tension during emergency scenes with the need to portray the characters’ emotional vulnerabilities?

Torrin Borrowdale: That was the most challenging and rewarding aspect. For scenes of high tension, I often employed dissonant chords and rhythmic patterns to create a sense of urgency. When the characters are vulnerable, I use instruments such at piano and strings which can convey a certain amount of sadness. It’s about finding the right balance. You want to put the audience in a place they can feel what the characters are going through.

Torrin Borrowdale: Absolutely. there’s a theme tied to Dr. Danny Simms and Dr. Xander Phillips’ relationship, which evolves throughout the season. I also focused on a theme for the Hurricane Abby episodes, and the final, a musical refrain that captures the essence of Miami. I think “Telling the Parents” and “Happy Dance” are crucial tracks as well – they just encapsulate different emotions and situations from the show! In many scenes,the score mirrors the characters’ arcs,changing in tone to reflect growth and relationships.
