Netflix launched the plan with ads seeking to offer users a cheaper option compared to traditional and more expensive options. This accessible modality divided the opinion of customers because it costs BRL 18.90 a month and still displays during the playback of movies, series and other content.

According to a report released by the company, the ad-supported plan has gained 5 million subscribers since its launch in November last year. During the Upfront 2023 event, the co-CEO of Netflix, Greg Peters, revealed that 25% of people choose the most affordable option when contracting the service, this in countries where the option with ads is available: Brazil, Germany, Australia, Canada, Korea, Spain, United States, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico and United Kingdom.

“The signs are promising: Engagement on our ad plan is similar to our comparable non-ad plan,” Peters said during the presentation. “This is critical because everything starts and ends with consumers. That’s why, despite all the competition out there, Netflix is the most popular streaming service today.”

These numbers reveal that the company was able to face the challenges of the first six months, making the basic plan an interesting option for those who want to use the platform for little money. The executive did not reveal whether the 5 million subscribers are global or just in the United States, so there are no details on the performance in Brazil.
