Netflix: paid account sharing, increases… this bad news for users

No more sharing your Netflix account? The streaming giant has announced that it will increase its prices to be able to share its account with several people outside its home. A decision that is only at the testing stage for the moment. We explain to you.

In Peru, Chile and Costa Rica, Netflix subscribers will have an unpleasant surprise. The streaming platform will launch a new test “in the coming weeks” which would require subscribers to pay additional fees to be able to share their account with members living at another address. Since the launch of the various Netflix offers, many users have shared their account to reduce the cost of the subscription.

A habit that Netflix obviously wants to stop: “So, for the past year, we have been working on ways to allow members who share outside their homes to do so easily and securely, while paying a little more”, explained Chengyi Long, Director of Product Innovation, on Netflix official site.

A few euros, but all the same

Users with the Standard and Premium subscription will be able to add up to two people who do not share the same postal address. The latter will have access to their own profile, personalized recommendations but above all their own password and login. An option that is not free since in Chile it will cost 2,380 pesos (2.70 euros), in Costa Rica this service will cost 2.99 dollars (2.70 euros) and in Peru it will be 7.9 soles (1.90 euros).

For those who already share their subscription with people outside their home, Netflix has everything covered. They will be able to transfer the entire profile to a new account.

For the moment, the streaming giant said it is studying this first test before potentially rolling it out to the rest of the world.

Allowing “a better deal” according to Netflix

A decision justified by Netflix to allow a better offer for its users: “As a result, accounts are shared between households, which has an impact on our ability to invest in new television programs and films for our members”, advanced Chengyi Long.

Recently, Netflix had also announced the increase in subscriptions in Ireland and England, as well as in the United States and Canada earlier in the year. The streaming platform has observed a slowdown in the number of its subscriptions for a few months. During the pandemic, Netflix had benefited greatly from an increase in its subscriptions, while citizens were forced to stay at home with the confinement measures imposed.
