A Netflix started today the (un)expected action to combat the sharing of passwords among its subscribers in Brazil and in other countries. The rollout, originally planned for the first quarter of this year, had been delayed following the company noted cancellations where the feature had already been introduced.
Under the new rules, subscribers will need to remove unauthorized persons from their accounts or else pay an additional fee of BRL 12.90 per month for each extra user who lives outside their primary domicile. The feature, however, is not available to customers who access the service through partners.
In an email sent to its subscribers, the company reiterated that a Netflix account is for the exclusive use of a single household and encouraged users to take advantage of new features such as Profile Transfer and Access and Device Management.
The password sharing functionality was initially tested in some Latin American markets before being expanded to Canada, New Zealand, Portugal e Spain earlier this year.
