Netflix: many “subscribers” use their ex’s logins

Bad practices are said to be common on streaming platforms.

In April, the platform estimated that more than 100 million households worldwide took ownership of the video streaming service by sharing their password. So she decided to roll out new features to allow people to securely share their account with friends and family members. And this, in exchange for a higher cost. Last March, the service therefore asked its Latin American subscribers who share their password to pay extra cost per month.

In this context, the FandomSpot.com site conducted a survey of 5,000 consumers of streaming videos and films. The object? “Knowing how widespread sharing of subscription services passwords was”, indicates the site.

The survey results reveal that, due to economic reasons, the average streaming account is shared by five people. “70% of consumers who use someone else’s account borrow it from a friend, family member or partner”, says the survey. But the numbers go further. 4% use a password provided by their employer, 3% use the login information of someone they have never met and 23% of respondents use the accounts of their ex-partners.

Long live the savings

In all, 65% of people who are still on their ex’s account do so for financial reasons. For their part, 11% admit to continuing to use their ex’s account out of spite and a quarter explain that they have simply not closed their session or have forgotten it. On the side of the owners of the account and “exs”, 7% say they are aware that a former partner is still using their account. “12% say they have already changed their password following discovering that an ex had their username”completes the survey.

More generally, more than a third, or 37% of those who do not have an account, admit to never having paid for a streaming subscription. When FandomSpot polled people who currently use someone else’s account, three-quarters said they would pay for their own subscription if needed. On the other hand, the other quarter confirmed that he would do without this service if he had to pay for it himself.

Note, however, that among those who pay for their own streaming subscriptions, only 20% say they worry regarding other people using their account.
