Green screens may soon be a thing of the past thanks to artificial intelligence. Researchers at Netflix are working on an alternative to green screen, Magenta Green Screen (MGS), a technology that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to create more realistic movie effects.
The most obvious way to superimpose effects on films was using chroma keying. This technique requires the actors to stand in front of a brightly colored background, usually blue or green, which can be replaced with different images, such as a weather map.
Now, Netflix is developing a new Magneta technology that uses machine learning to make the process easier, but requires the actors to be lit up in bright purple.
How does the new Netflix screen work?
Using the latest technology, filmmakers can simultaneously capture the color image of the lead actor and the high-quality alpha channel of the background without the need for a specialized camera or manual keystrokes.
The new technique films the actors in the foreground against a backdrop of bright green lights. It is illuminated with red and blue LEDs, which cast a purple glow on a green background, allowing for easy and efficient real-time substitution for displaying various video scenes. Thus, a realistic chroma key effect is achieved, even in difficult areas such as clear bottles and hair.
This technology uses machine learning algorithms to turn purple foreground actors into full-color objects, similar to other recent technological innovations.
The new technology has multiple advantages, including faster and more accurate results. One important benefit is that it does not restrict what the actor can wear. In the audition shot, the actor can be seen wearing a green dress and holding a green glass bottle, and neither of them disappeared when the green background was replaced, Gadgets Now reports.
