StreamingNetflix dethroned in the United States

The service narrowly lost its top spot in 2022 in its home market. No, it was not Disney + that blew the crown from him.

“Glass Onion”, one of the exclusive novelties introduced by Netflix for the holidays. The latter did not allow it to reverse the trend at the end of the year, according to JustWatch.

Parks Associates has released a ranking of the top 10 streaming video services. According to an estimated number of subscribers finalized in September 2022 by the emerging technology research and consulting firm, Netflix has lost its number one spot in the United States for the first time in its existence. One would have thought that it was Disney + who stole the crown from him, but not at all, it was Prime Video from Amazon, the eternal second, who achieved the feat. Between 2021 and 2022, in the United States, still Disney+ has in fact regressed, restoring a third place won in 2021 to Hulu.

Another American firm, JustWatch (which is expressed in market share) confirms Netflix’s downgrade and believes that Prime Video has retained its first place following September 2022 despite an avalanche of new releases released for the holidays by the former leader. Prime Video would thus hold 21% of the cake while Netflix would follow with 20%.

The case is far from over, however, says Parks Associates, which sees further growth potential for Netflix with the introduction of a low-cost ad-supported subscription and the hunt for shared passwords that should be generalized in 2023. Without giving any predictions for this year, the firm promises “disruptions and changes that will be exciting to follow.”

In miscellaneous, the firm indicates that 83% of American households with high-speed internet access subscribe to at least one streaming while 23% of them pay at least 9 subscriptions.

Still number 1 in the world

Worldwide, Netflix remains number 1 in the streaming market, reports the site 01net.com, which specifies that the platform has more than 223 million paying subscribers. For its part, Prime Video claims more than 200 million customers.
