Netflix cuts budget for Bioshock movie

Announced in early 2022 as a partnership between Netflix and video game producers 2K and Take-Two Interactive, the film adaptation of Bioshock (the first-person shooter released in 2007) has remained low-profile and little was known about its production.

It wasn’t until San Diego Domic Con that producer Roy Lee revealed that Netflix had cut the budget for the adaptation, even though it’s still in the works; the outlet reported Variety.

During a panel, Lee explained that “the new regime has cut budgets,” following the restructuring of Netflix’s leadership. They explained that, as a result, the BioShock movie will present “a more personal point of view, rather than a grander, larger project.”

Lee also broke down Netflix’s new overall compensation strategy, with bonuses based on viewership numbers. The producer added that it “motivates producers to make a movie that really reaches a larger audience.”

Beyond that, few details are known about the Bioshock movie. There’s no information on the cast, synopsis or release date.

Bioshock 4 is on the way

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Cloud Chamber, the studio behind the next game in the franchise, is working hard to speed up its development.

Despite numerous layoffs and studio closures in the video game industry during 2024, Cloud Chamber continues to offer job opportunities for the development of the new BioShock.

The studio has 29 open positions across a variety of disciplines including animation, art, design/scriptwriting, production/management and writing.

When 2K announced that they had begun working on a new installment of the BioShock series back in 2019, they mentioned that the title will be set in “a fantastical new world,” and is stated to be set during the 1960s in a fictional Antarctic city called Borealis.

While original BioShock director Ken Levine is not involved in the new game due to his work on Judas, it does feature several franchise veterans including design director Jonathan Pelling and creative director Hoagy de la Plante.
