A Netflix announced today that it will no longer offer the Basic plan in Brazil. The measure, which will also be adopted in countries such as Germany, Spain, Japan, Mexico and Australia, had already been put into practice in markets such as the United States and the United Kingdom — consolidating the company’s decision to focus on other plans (such as ).
The Basic plan is the cheapest to offer unlimited access to films, series and games on the platform without . Making it possible to watch the company’s content in HD quality (720p), it costs R$26 and allows you to use one device at a time — both to download and to play.
Very soon, anyone who wants to use Netflix without ads will have to invest minimally in the Standard plan, which costs R$40 and allows you to watch content in Full HD (1080p) on up to two devices. The Premium plan, in turn, allows you to watch in Ultra HD (4K) and use the platform on up to four devices for R$56.
The option to connect the platform to other devices, it is worth remembering, is limited to devices in a single home. If the user intends to add extra subscribers, they will need to pay an additional fee of R$13 for each of them — up to two in the Premium plan or one in the Standard plan.
The discontinuation of the Basic plan should come into effect next week and, at least initially, should only affect potential new subscribers of the service — that is, those who subscribe to the plan will still be able to continue on it (we’ll see for how long).

In the wake of this announcement, Netflix increased subscription prices in the US, UK and France. In the land of Uncle Sam, in fact, it is the second increase in 2023! There, the increases reached the Basic and Premium plans, which jumped from US$10 to US$12 and US$20 for US$23respectively.
Even though no changes in this regard have been announced for Brazil, it will not be surprising if the company also increases the price of its subscription plans here in the coming months.
Unexpected growth
While decisions like charging for sharing passwords proved unpopular when announced, they were actually good for Netflix’s coffers.
According to the Bloombergthe company is expected to end this year with more than 20 million new subscribers — more than double the number from 2022, when the service registered less than 9 million new subscriptions.
The ad-supported plan has also proven successful, with successive increases of almost 70% in user adoption each quarter.
