Netflix has partnered with Sennheiser to bring spatial sound to the streaming service’s original programming, including the recently released version. Weird things season 4.

“Spatial audio will be rolling out across our catalog starting today, and you can hear it for yourself by typing ‘spatial audio’ in the search bar and selecting a show or movie that supports it in the search results,” Blog post Says. The feature uses Sennheiser Ambeo technology.

Spatial audio involves arranging all sound sources in a typical 360-degree sound field around the listener’s position (in some cases, including vertical spatial positioning as well). Spatial Audio then uses that data to deliver audio to various devices, including TV speakers or headphones that typically deliver stereo sound only instead of the traditional multi-channel surround setup.

It has previously been seen in many consumer devices, from Apple’s AirPods to Sony’s PlayStation 5.

While spatial sound via stereo headphones doesn’t quite match what you’d get with a powerful home theater surround sound system, it usually provides a noticeable improvement in immersion in situations where a full surround setup isn’t available.

To this point, spatial audio will be automatically enabled when stereo audio is used moving forward. However, Netflix still recommend Using 5.1 surround sound or Dolby Atmos if you have physical surround speakers.

Previously, Netflix already supported spatial audio on certain Apple headphones, including AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, Beats Fit Pro and third-generation AirPods, provided the viewer watched on streaming devices that also support it, such as Apple TV 4K or later. iPhone or iPad models.

The addition of Sennheiser Ambeo support brings this feature to non-Apple devices, albeit in a different app.
