The French development studio Quantic Dream now belongs to the Chinese group NetEase or its gaming division NetEase Games.
This makes the company, led by David Cage and Guillaume de Fondaumière, the first NetEase studio in Europe.
Should act independently
“Quantic Dream will continue to operate independently and focus on developing and publishing its video games across all platforms, as well as supporting and publishing titles developed by third parties, while leveraging NetEase’s significant game development capabilities,” it said.
Quantic Dream is known for Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls and Detroit: Become Human, among others. The studio is currently working on Star Wars Eclipse.
“NetEase will deliver on its promise to help Quantic Dream realize its full potential,” said William Ding, CEO and director of NetEase. “By combining the wild creativity and exceptional narrative focus of Quantic Dream with the powerful facilities, resources and execution capabilities of NetEase, we believe there are endless possibilities that are redefining the interactive entertainment experience we bring to gamers worldwide might.”
What does the acquisition mean for Quantic Dream?
The development studio should benefit from more financial security as a result of the takeover. And, as NetEase CEO Ding emphasized in his comment, you can use the Chinese company’s capacities for yourself.
According to Quantic Dreams David Cage, it will also benefit the studio’s employees, “who have received a significant portion of our capital in recent years.”
NetEase Games had already invested in Quantic Dream three years ago, so Guillaume de Fondaumière sees the takeover as a “natural development” from which the development and sales side of Quantic Dream should benefit equally.
