Netanyahu’s comments come after Israeli forces sent 100 fighter jets on the night of Sunday to pre-empt an expected attack by the Hezbollah militia in southern Lebanon. According to the IDF, thousands of rocket systems were bombed.
Most of the up to 300 rockets and drones that Hezbollah had launched and sent against strategic targets inside Israel were intercepted.
– We strike at Hezbollah with a surprising and crushing blow. This is another step in the direction of changing the situation in the north and getting our citizens safely back to their homes. And, I repeat, this is not the last word,” Netanyahu said during a cabinet meeting.
Hezbollah, for its part, has called the attacks on Sunday “phase one” and a retaliation for Israel killing its military leader Fuad Shukr in the south of Lebanon’s capital Beirut at the end of July this year. However, the response had been delayed by “political considerations” of the ongoing ceasefire talks and negotiations for the release of hostages.
From the official statement, it appears that Hezbollah had planned the attack in advance to make sure that the retaliation would not trigger a full-scale war.
