TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was still undergoing tests at the hospital Sunday following a bout of dizziness, but was expected to be released that day, his office said.
Netanyahu, 73, was taken to hospital on Saturday following feeling slightly dizzy. His office said Sunday’s test results were normal and Netanyahu was feeling “very good.”
The Sheba Medical Center, where he had been hospitalized, said Netanyahu was in “excellent” condition following various tests, including cardiovascular, adding that the prime minister’s medical team would continue to monitor him following his discharge.
Netanyahu’s office said he had spent the previous day at the Sea of Galilee, a popular vacation spot in northern Israel, where temperatures soared to regarding 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) following a sweltering summer heat wave. After a series of tests, the initial assessment was that the veteran Israeli leader had suffered from dehydration.
After being hospitalized, a smiling Netanyahu posted a video on social media in which he said he had been in the sun on Friday without wearing a hat and without water. “Not a good idea,” he said.
Doctors ordered him to stay overnight in the hospital for observation and the weekly cabinet meeting was pushed back a day to Monday, according to his office.
Netanyahu is the longest-serving head of government, a total of 15 years in various terms. His current far-right government is a coalition of religious and ultranationalist parties that he took office in December.
His general health is said to be good, although he was briefly hospitalized in October following coming down with illness during Yom Kippur prayers, a fast day for devout Jews.
The Israeli president faces pressure on several fronts.
He is on trial on various corruption charges in a case that has bitterly divided the nation. His intransigence towards the Palestinians has drawn international criticism and has soured relations with the United States, his closest and most important ally.
In the country, tens of thousands of Israelis hold weekly anti-government demonstrations in protest of its plan to completely reform the judicial system.
Netanyahu’s allies say the plan is necessary to reduce the power of judges or elected officials. But opponents say the plan will destroy the fragile system of checks and balances and concentrate power in the hands of Netanyahu and his allies.
