Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed regret over Israel’s failure to prevent civilian casualties in the Gaza Strip in an interview broadcast on US television network CBS on Thursday. The Israeli armed forces would try to end the military operation in the Gaza Strip with a minimum of civilian casualties. “We are trying to do that, but unfortunately we are not succeeding,” Netanyahu said.

“Every death of a civilian is a tragedy. We are trying to do everything in our power to get civilians out of harm’s way, while Hamas is doing everything it can to keep them there,” Netanyahu said. He pointed out that Israel drops leaflets, “we call them on their cell phones and say, ‘Leave.’ And many have left,” he noted.

After the massacre with around 1,200 victims caused by fighters from the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas in the south of Israel, the Israeli military carried out numerous air strikes on the Gaza Strip and moved ground troops into the sealed off region. According to Palestinian information, more than 11,000 people have been killed in the fighting so far. International criticism of the actions of the Israeli armed forces is growing in view of the civilian casualties. The Israeli military, in turn, accuses Hamas of launching attacks from residential areas and hospitals and using civilians as human shields.
