Emirates Airlines announced yesterday the expansion of its partnership with Neste, by strengthening their cooperation to supply the carrier with more than three million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel blends in 2024 and 2025.

Emirates Airlines stated in a statement that sustainable fuel (SAF), which will be blended with conventional aviation fuel, will be available throughout 2024 and 2025 for the carrier’s flights departing from Amsterdam Schiphol and Singapore Changi International Airports.

She pointed out that its expanded partnership with Neste provides the largest amount of sustainable aviation fuel for a carrier in the Middle East and Africa so far, explaining that the mixture includes more than one million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel, i.e. a ratio of more than 30% with traditional aviation fuel.

Before the end of this year, Emirates Airlines will load sustainable aviation fuel from its hub in Dubai for the first time.

Sustainable aviation fuel reduces carbon emissions from flights by up to 80%, compared to using conventional jet fuel.

Emirates Airline President, Tim Clark, said: “The announcement of the expansion of the partnership with Neste represents a milestone in the history of Emirates Airlines, and accelerates the purchases of sustainable aviation fuel for our operations. It also comes within the many initiatives we are focusing on to reduce carbon emissions. Which includes operating highly efficient aircraft, continuing to renew our fleet starting in 2024, in addition to enhancing fuel efficiency in our operations.”

For his part, Vice President for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Neste, Alexander Kuiper, said: “We are proud to expand our current cooperation with Emirates Airlines beyond 2024. We also continue to intensify our global production of sustainable aviation fuel, and support Emirates’ commitment.” “By reducing emissions by providing sustainable aviation fuel.”

First flight

At the beginning of this year, Emirates Airlines, in cooperation with Neste, succeeded in operating the first test flight in the region using 100% sustainable fuel in one of the two engines of the Boeing 777 aircraft, and the carrier’s first flight was conducted using sustainable fuel mixed with conventional aviation fuel. In 2017, flying from Chicago with a Boeing 777, Emirates Airlines also increased the proportion of sustainable fuel for flights from Stockholm, and is currently operating flights from Paris, Lyon and Oslo using a mixture of the two types.
