What is Nergi?

Nergi is a fruit berry of the Actinidia arguta species, originally called Kiwai, Siberian kiwi or mini kiwi. It is between 2 and 3 cm. Surprisingly, this baby kiwi is not a GMO: it has existed in the wild in Asia for centuries! The berry being very fragile, in the 90s New Zealand botanists had the idea of ​​making crosses in order to obtain a fruit more resistant to the temperate climate. The fruit of natural pollination, the Nergi kiwi has great taste and nutritional qualities and keeps better than the original berries. A Nergi plant produces between 10 and 50 kg of fruit.

Nergi, a responsible little fruit

Nergi is an eco-responsible fruit that pays attention to its greenhouse gas emissions. The farmers in the sector have chosen sustainable agriculture for Nergi crops: the plant being sufficiently resistant to diseases, the crops do not require any chemical intervention during the fruit production cycle; water and fertilizers are also used sparingly.

In France, nergi is mainly produced by the Prim’land company in the South West of France to be closer to the areas where it is consumed.

What does Nergi taste like?

Its taste is similar to that of its cousin the kiwi, even if the mini version is less tart. In addition to its small size, Nergi can be eaten or pecked with its skin. A great advantage for those who want to eat healthy when they are out and regarding. It can be kept for 3 days at room temperature to a week in the refrigerator.

Like other fruits, it is possible to use Nergi in multiple recipes, in a savory or sweet version. The baby kiwi can go very well in a glass in a starter, in a revisited cake pop version, or even in a smoothie

Please note, baby kiwis are not available all year round, Nergi is only available from mid-September to the end of November.
