NephroCarDiathe conference that, since 2010, interdisciplinary approaches the connection between the most complex and frequent pathologies, acute and chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease and diabetes, is approaching.
I talked to Dr. Oana Schiller, nephrology primary doctor and one of the initiators of the Conference NephroCarDiaabout the news of this edition, the special sessions and the surprises prepared for the participants.
The 9th edition of the Conference will take place in Timișoara, on November 21-23, 2024. Details and registration here: https://www.boaladerinichi.ro/.
“Since the first edition of NefroCarDia, in 2010, we have always tried to bring something new, and this year we are talking about cardiovascular pathology and metabolic syndrome in pregnancywith all the complications that can arise. We will have an interdisciplinary session where we will hear the opinion of a cardiologist, a nephrologist, but also a pediatrician and a gynecologist. When we are faced with such a case, all those mentioned should collaborate for the best decision, as it is about both the mother and the fetus” explained Dr. Schiller the new areas that NefroCarDia will address this year.
However, there will also be actions that continue similar to the previous editions: “We will continue the meetings with colleagues from ATI, to talk about intensive nephrological therapy and with gastroenterologists because the liver is also affected in cardio-reno-metabolic syndrome” says Dr. Oana Schiller.
The list of guests who will join the conference is impressive: “We will have as guests from outside the country, doctors with a vast and old expertise in kidney transplantation, both by the number of operations performed, but also by the extremely good results they have in survival of the graft” declares primary nephrologist, Oana Schiller.
This also explains the diversity of medical specialties found among the conference guests: “Since the first edition in 2010, we have sought to bring renowned lecturers, from the country and abroad, with proven professional experience, in order to have a direct exchange of information, useful for the participants . As the name of the conference suggests, they primarily belong to nephrology, cardiology and diabetes, but they are joined every year by doctors from various other specialties, depending on the chosen theme.”
Special sessions included in the NefroCarDia program
One of the special sessions of NefroCarDia this year is that of Onco-Nephrology, positioned right at the opening of the conference. The session is already in its second edition and will highlight the common and bidirectional pathology between cancer and kidneys, which is unfortunately on the rise.
“In some countries it is already considered as a subspecialty, because, on the one hand, those who have chronic kidney disease have a higher risk of developing neoplasms, and on the other hand, those who have various forms of cancer, they can end up developing acute or chronic kidney diseases” says dr. Oana Schiller in the interview.
Who are the NefroCarDia participants?
Regarding the participants he expects at the conference, dr. Schiller states: “we are looking for colleagues from all medical specialties: basically anyone who deals with patients with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, liver disease and of course kidney disease, because we will talk about prevention, about diagnosis and treatment, about guidelines and what knows at this moment about the most common conditions with which patients present at the hospital or in medical offices. We bet on those who are interested in sharing experiences with colleagues from the same or another specialty and, at the same time, learning the latest news in the respective fields”.
Interdisciplinarity: the special character of the NefroCarDia Conference
The NefroCarDia conference stood out from the very beginning for its interdisciplinary spirit, a trend we see more and more often at other scientific events as well.
And dr. Oana Schiller explained to us what the “hot spots” are in the kidney-heart-diabetes relationship.
“NefroCarDia was the first event that united all three specialties and we initiated it, as nephrologists, because kidney diseases are accompanied by a significant number of complications. We, nephrologists, are always faced with the need to collaborate with doctors from other specialties and realize more and more, in everyday practice, that in the end we have to treat a patient as a “whole” and not each of his diseases , separately” says dr. Schiller reasons why the interdisciplinary approach came as a natural necessity.
Collaboration in teams made up of doctors with different specialties must become a habit in daily practice.
Dr. Oana Schiller explains: “This is also the peculiarity of medicine: no one gets to know everything. That’s why we each have a different specialty and we have to get used to interdisciplinary collaboration, for the benefit of patients.”
The most “hot” points are now moving towards prevention, towards finding new methods of early diagnosis, such as biomarkers, for example, towards treatments that slow down the progression of chronic diseases or the appearance and worsening of some complications, Dr. Schiller. “The purpose of these meetings is to discuss interdisciplinary, with the idea of being able to ensure the best possible and adequate care for patients with multiple ailments, because their incidence is alarming”.
Chronic kidney disease: a major public health problem
Regarding chronic kidney disease (CKD) dr. Oana Schiller explains why it is considered a major public health problem: “1 in 10 people now have CKD (chronic kidney disease) and it is projected that in 2040, it will become the 5th cause of death worldwide, surpassing cancer or diabetes.
And the numbers best illustrate the seriousness of the situation: currently, more than 850 million people in the world suffer from BCR.
If we consider that of these:
- 10-30% have advanced BCR (stages 4 and 5) and
- about 50% of them have cardiovascular disease and
- between 30-50% of all people with BCR also have diabetes (varies by area)
- of those with metabolic liver disease (MASLD), about 30% also have BCR
then it becomes very easy to understand why…”interdisciplinary” is mandatory at NefroCarDia. Dr. Oana Schiller declares at the end of the interview: “I know that the numbers seem boring and tedious, but this is how we realize the enormous impact that certain problems have on people and health systems. Precisely because we always want to bring new data from the respective fields, this year we will also discuss liver damage in the metabolic syndrome, but also about the complications of these pathologies in obstetrics”.

The Hilarious Reality of Nephrology, Cardiology, and Diabetes: Join the Party at NephroCarDia!
Well, folks, get ready because the NephroCarDia Conference is back for its 9th round, riding in like Rocky Balboa to tackle some heavyweight contenders: acute and chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes! It’s been interdisciplinary since 2010—yes, that’s right! Not just your run-of-the-mill conference, but a confab of fabulous medical minds colliding like an awkward first date that ends up being the best thing that ever happened to both parties!
We had the chance to speak with Dr. Oana Schiller, a nephrology primary doctor and one of the masterminds behind this brain-meltingly good event. Get this—it’s happening in Timișoara from November 21-23, 2024. No, it’s not a bootcamp for kidney enthusiasts; it’s a scientific gathering where wifi connection is optional, but adding years to your medical expertise is mandatory!
What’s Cooking at NephroCarDia?
In typical Dr. Schiller fashion, she laid out the delicious buffet of knowledge available this year. We’re talking about the tantalizing topic of cardiovascular pathology and metabolic syndrome in pregnancy! Yes, the stakes are high, and we’ve got a cardiologist, nephrologist, pediatrician, and gynecologist rolling up their sleeves to collaborate… because let’s be honest; when the health of a mother and fetus is at stake, every specialty is needed—unless, of course, you’re trying to add a dentist to this medical soirée. That could get weird.
Some good ol’ fashioned collaborations are back, too, with sessions cheering on our friends from ICU and gastroenterology! Why? Because when it comes to your body, it’s like one big, dysfunctional family: everyone’s gotta get along. Like your liver being the party crasher in a cardio-reno-metabolic syndrome shindig! Seriously, your liver is like that friend who drinks too much and ends up spilling secrets that everyone else wanted to keep quiet.
The Star-Studded Lineup
And let’s not gloss over the guest list. Dr. Schiller promises some real heavyweights in the kidney transplantation game. We’re talking experts with a resume that would make even Iron Man jealous! These are the folks who’ve not just performed tons of kidney transplants, but who also throw in fantastically good survival rates—i.e. they don’t throw busy kidneys in the corner to pout when the going gets tough.
A Special Session on the Rise
Let’s dive into the special offerings at this year’s conference. At the opening, dazzling attendees will be treated to the awe-inspiring world of Onco-Nephrology! Yes, it’s a new subspecialty to watch—because when it comes to kidney issues and cancer, everyone wants to play doctor. And trust me, they are, as studies show that it’s a two-way street. CKD patients have a higher risk of developing cancer, while on the other hand, cancer treatments have a high chance of taking kidneys down with them. It’s like a medical game of risk where no one really wins…
Who Can Attend? Everyone, apparently!
“We’re looking for colleagues from all medical specialties,” Dr. Schiller says, “because honestly, if you deal with anything related to heart disease, diabetes, liver disarray, or kidney chaos, you’d best be here!” It’s the buffet of medical knowledge that nobody knew they needed but everyone secretly craves. Think of it as a networking opportunity where you might just cross paths with the person you’ve been meaning to chat about that weird case with; you know, the one that keeps you up at night!
Interdisciplinarity: The Spice of Medical Life
According to Dr. Schiller, the secret sauce of NephroCarDia is its interdisciplinary approach. “We’re all getting together because we each bring something unique to the table,” she explains, and if that’s not a solid reason to attend, I don’t know what is! It’s like the Avengers of the medical field—everyone’s got their superpower, and when combined, you’ll save lives instead of sparking intergalactic wars!
Chronic Kidney Disease: A Stark Reality
Now let’s get serious for a second. Chronic kidney disease is the proverbial ticking time bomb in global health, with 1 in 10 people already affected. By 2040, it’s on track to become the 5th leading cause of death worldwide—smashing past even cancer or diabetes like the Hulk at a costume party!
Wrap It All Up!
The NephroCarDia Conference isn’t just another medical meeting; it’s a big deal! Complete with 18 EMC points if you play your cards right! Not bad for a meeting where you’ll probably see more medical jargon flying around than actual people! So mark those calendars and grab your seat!

Dapagliflozin CKD guidelines
Le,” she emphasizes. “This isn’t just a bunch of specialists sitting in a room; it’s an opportunity for real collaboration, where sharing expertise can lead to innovative solutions for our patients.” With a nod to the seriousness of chronic conditions like kidney disease, cardiology, and diabetes, the conference underscores the need for a multifaceted approach to patient care.
Dr. Schiller also highlights the growing importance of prevention and early diagnosis. “With one in ten individuals affected by chronic kidney disease, the urgency to innovate in early intervention is palpable,” she states. By gathering experts from different fields, the conference aims to address not only the treatment of these chronic diseases but also reducing their incidence through thoughtful collaboration.
As the NephroCarDia Conference unfolds in Timișoara, attendees can expect a lively exchange of ideas and findings. The lineup includes renowned specialists who are not only knowledgeable but passionate about improving patient outcomes. “This is not just a chance to collect points for continuing medical education,” Dr. Schiller remarks with a chuckle. “It’s about transforming the way we think and work together!”
For medical professionals looking to expand their network and deepen their knowledge, the NephroCarDia Conference promises an engaging experience filled with valuable insights. Register now to be part of this extraordinary medical gathering and take steps toward forging interdisciplinary connections that truly matter in the fight against chronic diseases.
Remember, the future of patient care lies in collaboration—because when specialists unite, it’s not just smarter; it’s the key to creating a healthier tomorrow!
