Brandstötter: “There is no way around a committee reform. Because without depoliticization, the ORF has no future in the long run.”
Vienna (OTS) – “This is not the promised reform, but a missed opportunity”, media spokeswoman Henrike Brandstötter affirmed the NEOS position on the ORF law following the amendment was approved today by the ÖVP and the Greens in the constitutional committee. “Especially in times full of disinformation and fake news, we need a modern, independent public broadcaster whose reporting we can rely on. But instead of creating the necessary conditions for this with the new ORF law, the ÖVP and the Greens have left important, fundamental questions unanswered: What are the tasks and goals of public broadcasting in 2023 and in the future? How can the ORF fulfill its core mission? How can we prevent future interventions in reporting and appointments? These and many other questions must be clarified in order to ensure a pluralistic media market that offers all citizens diversity in democratic discourse.”
For Brandstötter, the new ORF law shows once once more that the ÖVP and the Greens lack sensible ideas and concepts for a contemporary media policy. In addition, it is a “severe disappointment” that the federal government is taking even more money out of people’s pockets with the household levy, despite the high inflation it is responsible for, without reforming the ORF in its structures: “The federal government is sticking to the state levy and does not touch the money of the provincial governors. At the same time, it ignores all advice from experts, the opposition and civil society who call for committee reform.” Brandstötter criticizes that this is not media policy, but a continuation of the standstill. “We NEOS are sticking with it: there is no way around a committee reform. Because without depoliticization, the ORF has no future in the long run.”
