NEOS on UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: Under this government, inclusion is only fiction

Fiedler: “There is a lack of political will to change towards an inclusive society in which everyone has the same opportunities and the right to a self-determined life.”

Vienna (OTS) NEOS spokeswoman Fiona Fiedler describes the results of the state examination for the UN Disability Rights Convention as “a sign of poverty for the government”, as Austria was one of the first countries to ratify the UN Disability Rights Convention. The talks in the United Nations Committee of Experts have now confirmed that Austria has even worsened its implementation of the UN Disability Rights Convention since 2017/2018.

“There is simply a lack of political will to change towards an inclusive society in which everyone has the same opportunities and the right to a self-determined life,” says Fiedler. “This is also shown by the fact that the federal government regularly wipes our suggestions for improvement and applications off the table. There is still no legal entitlement to the 11th and 12th school year for children with special educational needs. It is also still much more difficult for people with disabilities to gain a foothold in the labor market in Austria than in other countries – this also applies to returning to work. Women with disabilities are severely disadvantaged and there are still no nationwide guidelines for personal assistance. The whole area of inclusion is like a huge construction site – and nobody in this federal government is ready to tackle it.” Fiedler criticizes the ÖVP and the Greens for speaking out on working groups and the National Action Plan on Disability 2. There is still no budgeting for this. “An umpteenth working group will not significantly improve the living conditions of people with disabilities. We NEOS demand real action instead of delaying tactics.”
