NEOS on protection against violence: Raising awareness in elementary education

Vienna (OTS) –

On the occasion of the “16 Days Against Violence” initiative, NEOS women’s spokesperson Henrike Brandstötter once again appeals for awareness-raising measures to start with the youngest children: “Politicians have the task of tackling the problem at the root and not reacting until it is too late is. Gender stereotypes are a common reason why a false understanding of the ‘stronger and weaker sex’ later arises – and unfortunately also leads to violence against women. “We must therefore begin our educational work in elementary education, because it is never too early to convey that men and women are equal and have uncompromisingly the same rights in our liberal society.”

Financial education as an essential component

There have already been 27 femicides this year. Austria is therefore the sad record holder. In addition to raising awareness of gender stereotypes as early as possible and expanding violence prevention, financial education is also an essential component in strengthening women’s independence. Brandstötter: “A woman’s freedom begins in her own wallet. Especially in old age, we often see the problem of women remaining in violent relationships due to financial difficulties. It is therefore essential that women are given the right tools so that they can manage their finances independently. Because this is something that really empowers women – in complete contrast to the unspeakable stove bonuses that some federal states are currently using to provide completely the wrong incentives.”
