Noble goals

Motamayor said in a separate interview from the Dutch capital that the project will expand significantly following the two pilot greenhouses are ready, noting that construction began earlier this year, and it is planned to be completed by next year.

“We will expand to hundreds of hectares, which will include several types of greenhouses,” Motamayor added.

NEOM needs more than 1,000 hectares of greenhouses to achieve its goal of producing more than 300,000 tons of fruits and vegetables, a target it is trying to reach in the next 8 to 10 years.

The Dutch company, which combines a wide range of the latest horticultural technologies, including the introduction of artificial intelligence in the cropping process and advanced water filtration systems, aims to start operating the first site as early as August next year.

At one site, a new solar and seawater cooling system is being introduced to power the greenhouse during the sweltering summer heat. This approach will greatly reduce the use of water from the local network.

At the second site, a greenhouse will be built to serve as a “plant quarantine”, in order to introduce perennial crops into NEOM.
