After it became known that Vallenato singer Nelson Velásquez was sentenced to four years in prison for violating the copyright of the group “Los Inquietos del Vallenato,” the artist spoke out on his social networks.
There has been talk on social media over the last few hours that the singer would not have the rights to perform the vallenato group’s songs at concerts, and that was why there was a lawsuit.
However, in an image posted on his Instagram account, Velásquez indicated that “he is authorized to perform the works without exception” and named some of the songs that, according to him, he could sing in concerts such as “Volver, Quiero saber de ti, Ahora que te vas, Nunca niegues que te amo, Te pierdo y te pienso, entrégame tu amor, tu cómic, un millón de besos, vin a pedir perdón.”

He later wrote that “the judicial decision regarding the violation of intellectual property has no relation to the rights of my works and I do not know the reasons for which it was judged.”
The lawsuit was filed in 2012 by Jair López, the group’s owner and legal representative, following unauthorized interpretation of their songs by the artist.
The sentence condemns Nelson Velásquez to 4 years in prison and a fine of more than 25 million pesos, equivalent to 26.66 current monthly minimum wages.
