Nell Zink is going on a reading tour with her new novel “Avalon” in May and June.

On May 16, Rowohlt will publish her new novel Avalon, with which Nell Zink will also go on a reading tour in May and June.

Nell Zink’s new novel is finally out: With “Avalon” she tells an unusual love story and draws the portrait of a young woman who, once morest all odds, is looking for her place in the world. The 59-year-old author writes regarding American class society with drastic irony.

Bran Thomas learned early on what loss means. She never met her father, and her mother died following she left her daughter with relatives at an early age to become a Tibetan nun. Bran is cheap labor for her step family, who runs a gardening business and does all kinds of crooked business, but she is smart and makes it through high school – only she lacks a perspective.

She knows how to survive, but she also knows that to be happy, surviving is not enough.

Living in her rickety car and struggling with odd jobs, she meets Peter, a handsome intellectual high-flyer from the east coast who spews non-stop criticism of capitalism. Bran falls madly in love. As the two embark on a long-distance relationship that is as stormy as it is troubled, Bran increasingly questions their disastrous existence. She knows how to survive, but she also knows that to be happy, surviving is not enough.

Born in California in 1964, Nell Zink grew up in rural Virginia. She studied philosophy at the College of William and Mary and received her doctorate in media studies from the University of Tübingen. In 2016, she published her debut novel, The Wall Runner, and her 2019 novel, Virginia, was nominated for a National Book Award. She lives in Bad Belzig, south of Berlin.
