Díaz-Canel acknowledged in a report from the Presidency that the shortage of medicines and medical supplies on the island will continue, despite the critical situation that the country’s pharmacies and hospitals have faced for a long time.
The president also addressed the lack of resources and the flight of professionals from the health sector on the island and mentioned the existence of “negative trends” such as the “sale of services” within the health system, as well as the resale of medicines and supplies in the black market. But he did not offer solutions to this healthcare crisis.
“Given the lack of supplies and medicines, the best response we can give to our population in such difficult times is the quality of services, with shortcomings, we will have them, we are going to continue with a lack of medicines“he confirmed.

Since 2020, Cuba faces a serious shortage of basic medicines, a situation that affects the population and limits access to medical care. In September 2023, BioCubaFarma, the business group of the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, announced the acquisition of supplies for the manufacture of 16 medicines with a deficit.
