Children are the future of our society. High-quality education for everyone is the foundation for a successful and self-determined life. The continuous expansion of educational institutions in a young and dynamically growing district like Favoriten is therefore essential. Particularly where new housing is being built, it is important that the education infrastructure keeps pace. Thanks to first-class educational institutions in the immediate vicinity, children have the opportunity to enjoy an excellent education, regardless of their family’s financial situation. This not only promotes the individual development of each child, but also strengthens the social cohesion and future viability of each individual and thus also of the general public. The planned all-day elementary school at Neilreichgasse 126 offers space for around 500 students, teachers and school staff in 17 classes. The zoning process is currently underway, followed by an architectural competition. Commissioning is scheduled for the 2029/30 school year – construction is expected to begin in November 2027.
The City of Vienna uses a variety of data sources for well-founded school space requirements planning. This includes information on population development, trends in class and student numbers as well as current and planned housing projects throughout the city. The city of Vienna’s demographic forecasts serve as an important guideline for estimating future population developments. These forecasts are crucial to identify early where and when the need for additional educational facilities will arise and enable proactive action to meet the educational needs of the growing urban population. In the past ten years, the City of Vienna has created around 1,200 classes for compulsory education. This school is another building block for a successful education system in the city.
In the coming years, the existing buildings from the 60s and 70s will be renovated and upgraded in the area around the school. Among other things, the buildings’ energy system will be brought up to standard, elevators will be installed and new living space will also be created. Two events took place to provide citizens with comprehensive information: a digital dialogue event took place on October 16, 24, and an on-site dialogue exhibition on October 22, 2024. Comments on the draft zoning plan could be submitted between September 26, 2024 and November 7, 2024.

**Interviewee:** Dr. Anna Müller, Educational Policy Expert
**Interviewer:** Sophie Schneider, News Editor
**Sophie Schneider:** Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Müller. There’s been a lot of attention on Favoriten, especially with the upcoming all-day elementary school at Neilreichgasse 126. Can you tell us more about why this development is so important for the community?
**Dr. Anna Müller:** Absolutely, Sophie. Favoriten is a rapidly growing district with a young population, which makes educational expansion crucial. The new all-day elementary school will provide space for around 500 students, ensuring that families can access quality education close to home. This is vital, as it helps level the playing field for children from varying socioeconomic backgrounds.
**Sophie Schneider:** How do you see this new school impacting the children and the community as a whole?
**Dr. Anna Müller:** High-quality education is foundational for personal and community growth. By investing in educational facilities, we are not only promoting individual development but also fostering social cohesion. Children who receive a good education are more likely to become active, engaged citizens, which benefits society as a whole.
**Sophie Schneider:** You mentioned the school will accommodate 17 classes. What does this mean for educational quality in Favoriten?
**Dr. Anna Müller:** This means smaller class sizes, which can lead to more personalized attention for students. With dedicated teachers and adequate resources, we can further enrich the learning environment. Furthermore, the all-day model supports working parents, enhancing the overall well-being of families in the district.
**Sophie Schneider:** The zoning process is currently underway. What challenges do you anticipate in this phase?
**Dr. Anna Müller:** Zoning can often face delays due to various factors such as local regulations and community input. It’s crucial that stakeholders, including parents and educators, have a voice in this process to ensure the school meets the community’s needs.
**Sophie Schneider:** Looking forward, what are the next steps after the zoning process is complete?
**Dr. Anna Müller:** Once zoning is approved, we can move on to construction plans and timelines. It’s essential that we maintain a focus on quality during this phase to deliver a school that meets educational standards and serves the community effectively.
**Sophie Schneider:** Thank you for your insights, Dr. Müller. It sounds like very promising developments are ahead for the education system in Favoriten!
**Dr. Anna Müller:** Thank you, Sophie. It’s an exciting time for the community, and I believe education will be at the heart of Favoriten’s success.
