Neighbors of a Solvay factory are 5 times more exposed to PFAS, Belgian scientists consider the contamination worrying

On August 17, the results of our analyzes were communicated to the multinational. Here is the reaction of the Belgian group : “DSince 2004, more than 5,000 blood tests have been performed on our employees. The results of these analyzes do not show any problem from a clinico-toxicological point of view. […] We have taken note that your analysis is not scientific but only an instantaneous and limited sampling”.

We asked to be able to consult Solvay’s analyzes and statistics. We never received them. The company says it is bound by a confidentiality agreement. During our long investigation, we managed to get our hands on a analysis commissioned by Solvay on one of its employees. It dates from March 2007. We were able to authenticate this document. The worker has a PFOA level of 177 μg/L. That is 17 times above the German alert threshold.

With these results, we are much stronger

At Spinetta Marnego, the blood test volunteers were able to take part in an information meeting where Belgian scientists had come to explain the results. The reactions fuse:A municipal administration that does not carry out large-scale research is an irresponsible administration“.

Another continues:I took it for granted that as a citizen of a democratic country, I had to know what they were producing in front of my house. I had no idea that a chemical company mattered more to the state than a citizen’s health.”

In the room, there is also Claudio Lombardi, former Alderman for the environment. He has been fighting for years to document the pollution of the Solvay factory: “This is very useful for us, because until now we talked a lot but there were no results. With these results, we are much stronger.”

The Italian media will relay the results. A week later, Claudio Lombardi will be heard before the Environment and Safety Commission of the city of Alessandria. The Italian health authorities (ASL) finally confirmed to us that they were going to launch a large biomonitoring of the residents of Spinetta in February 2023. News that the inhabitants had been waiting for for many years. They will finally understand the real risks of Solvay’s activity on their health.
