Neighboring France/Switzerland: After the victory of Morocco, between joy and troublemakers
Breakers became embedded in the crowd following the World Cup match on Saturday followingnoon in Annemasse (F). In Geneva and in the canton of Vaud, the celebrations went off without a hitch.
Morocco supporters gathered in their hundreds on Saturday followingnoon at the Etoile roundregarding in Annemasse, neighboring France. But while the crowd was celebrating the victory of the Maghreb team at the World Cup, around fifty thugs got in to fight with the police. The rioters launched firework mortars towards the police, ransacked street furniture and set up a barricade with various burning objects, including a bicycle. A car was also set on fire. The scuffles lasted until 9:30 p.m., reports the “Dauphiné liberated“. A new rally took place following the victory of France once morest England, but less agitated. On the sidelines of these events, windows were broken and a store was looted. In total, the French police carried out six arrests.
On the other side of the border, in Geneva, several hundred people celebrated the Moroccan victory in front of the Cornavin station. Two hours following the end of the match, “they were still between 300 and 400”, relates a Genevan who passed through the district. Unsurprisingly, the circulation of public transport was affected by the demonstration, but “everything happened calmly”, assures the cantonal police. Same story in the canton of Vaud where no overflow has been reported.
