Nehammer and Babler reserved after conversation

As expected, nothing of the content was leaked to the outside world, only that the two will inform the Federal President about it in the coming days or week, the ÖVP and SPÖ announced in almost identical statements.

Meeting in a secret location

Like the meeting on Tuesday between Nehammer and FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl, today’s meeting also took place at an unknown location. Following the meeting on Tuesday, Nehammer appeared in front of the press and once again repeated his no to Kickl. He will not be its “stirrup holder”. State Secretary Claudia Plakolm, who sits on the ÖVP negotiating team, also reiterated her no to Kickl on the sidelines of a press conference on Wednesday. When asked about a government with the SPÖ, she was vague and pointed out that they were currently still exploring. The FPÖ, in turn, courted the ÖVP again on Wednesday, but also made it clear that there would not be an FPÖ in a coalition without its chairman.

Against this background, a coalition of ÖVP, SPÖ and a smaller party currently seems most likely. The better chances are attributed to the NEOS, and Nehammer is also meeting with their party leader Beate Meinl-Reisinger this Wednesday. A meeting between Meinl-Reisinger and Babler is scheduled for tomorrow, but this will also take place behind closed doors at a secret location.

The last of the talks commissioned by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen to resolve the “stalemate” – that the FPÖ, as the party with the largest number of votes, is claiming the chancellorship, but no one wants to form a coalition with it or its chairman – will take place tomorrow between Kickl and Babler . However, the SPÖ fundamentally rules out a coalition with the FPÖ.
