Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten informed the select ministerial committee (“kern”) on Saturday regarding the progress of the ongoing negotiations with Engie, the operator of nuclear power plants in Belgium, on extending the lifetime of the Doel 4 and Tihange 3 reactors. Significant progress has been made in this dossier, announced a spokesman for Alexander De Croo.
The Prime Minister, the Minister of Energy and Engie met on Friday and substantial progress has been made, according to the De Croo cabinet. “The final details of an agreement with Engie must now be concreted, with the objective of landing in the coming days”, he underlines. Once the agreement is tied up, the restricted Council of Ministers will have to give the green light.
The federal government and Engie already reached an agreement in principle last January on extending the operation of the two reactors, but Engie wanted to see a cap on the cost of dismantling nuclear power plants and disposing of nuclear waste. No details have filtered on this subject.
