The European Commission can negotiate with Berne the future relations between the EU and Switzerland. EU member states approved the European Commission’s negotiating mandate on Tuesday, a few days following the same decision taken by the Federal Council.
This adoption was announced to Keystone-ATS by an EU official. The item was on the agenda of the Ecofin Council, which had to formally approve the mandate. The document presented by the European Commission was discussed within working groups and by the permanent representations of the EU Member States.
The Federal Council, for its part, adopted the mandate last Friday. Negotiations should begin this month, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) announced last week.
