Repatriations for those without the right to remain, immigration for skilled workers: these are the aims of new migration agreements that the Federal Government’s special representative is negotiating – with six countries from Europe, Asia, Africa and South America.

The federal government’s special representative, Joachim Stamp, appointed to conclude migration agreements, is conducting confidential discussions with several countries – according to the dpa news agency from the Federal Ministry of the Interior. The countries Georgia, Moldova, Kenya, Colombia, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan were specifically mentioned.

However, only a small proportion of the people who applied for asylum in Germany came from these countries this year: by August, 12,000 out of a total of more than 220,000 asylum seekers. A first migration agreement with India was signed in December last year.

Such agreements are intended to oblige the contractually bound countries to take back rejected asylum seekers. At the same time, they should enable people to come to Germany legally. The traffic light government sees such agreements as the key to steering uncontrolled immigration into regulated channels.
