Sharing at the topic, Mr. Nguyen Duc Trung, an expert in charge of the ICDL Digital Student program, said that according to many research documents of prestigious organizations in the world, the rate of internet users in the world is 62, 5% while that in Vietnam is 73.2%. In the world, the number of people who regularly use social networks is 58.4%, while in Vietnam it is 78.1%.

In 2022, 72.1 million Vietnamese people use the internet. The number of internet users accessing by smartphone is 95.8%. The average daily internet use time is 6 hours 38 minutes, of which using social networks is more than 2 hours.

The purpose of using the internet is to contact and connect with friends and relatives, accounting for 71.4%; information search 69%; follow news and events 68.4%; watching videos, TV shows, movies is 59.6%; listening to music 53.5%; education and learning 46.4%, making new friends 43%, gaming 39.4%.

Trung added that in Vietnam, a survey by the Children’s Department, Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs showed that in the third quarter of 2022, 89% of children used the internet, of which 87% used it daily. 5 to 7 hours/day. However, only 36% of children are educated regarding cyber safety.

According to Mr. Trung, the internet is a source of information, knowledge and entertainment treasure that brings value to users. However, if you do not have the skills to use it, it will bring many risks such as invasion of your privacy, being seduced, scammed, addicted, even potentially abused.

“So what is the solution for students to use the internet safely?” asked Mr. Nguyen Van Nam, Senior Advisor, ICDL Vietnam.

According to Mr. Nam, the current generation of teachers have never or very little had contact with the internet as pedagogical students. Meanwhile, the internet has developed rapidly in schools in the past 5 years, and many bad trends have appeared, affecting students.

Students of any age are easily deceived regarding advertisements and information on the Internet. According to one study, students from middle school and above are susceptible. “Only 36% of children aged 16-17 are trained in using the internet, the rest do not have the knowledge to use the internet safely. This depends a lot on the school and the family,” said Mr. Nam.

The school needs to organize training activities to raise students’ awareness of cyberinformation security, thereby helping students avoid possible risks when using the network, Mr. Nam said.

In addition, schools should also have seminars for parents to increase awareness of information safety and security, equip parents with signs to recognize unsafe risks online as well as public information. Support tools for parents to accompany their children when using the internet.

For students, it is necessary to educate them on principles when using the internet such as not getting acquainted and chatting with strangers, not sharing information; guide students to optimize search engines, turn on safe search mode, and lock safe search.
