The COVID-19 outbreak in Hong Kong continued, with an additional 1,361 teachers and students reporting positive cases yesterday from 799 schools. Among the 26 classes in the primary school of Malvern International School in Hong Kong, Pak Shek Kok, a total of 21 classes have reported cases in recent days, and a total of 35 teachers and students have been infected with the virus. Yesterday, another 22 schools with a total of 24 classes had to suspend classes, including the K3C followingnoon class of Tsuen Wan Luk Yeung Kindergarten. The school itself is suspending two classes.
There are regarding 597 students and 87 staff in the primary school of Hong Kong Malvern International School. In the past 7 days, there have been 21 cases of infection in 21 classes, involving 30 students and 5 staff, and at least 3 cases in each of 4 classes. Zhang Zhujun, director of the Department of Infectious Diseases of the Center for Health Protection, said that there has been no obvious gathering or epidemiological connection between the cases at the school, but due to the large number of people affected, it was decided to suspend classes for the sake of safety.
The authorities received reports from 799 schools yesterday that 1,140 students and 221 staff had tested positive. A total of 618 schools had more than one confirmed case in the past seven days. Zhang Zhujun said that a total of 24 classes in 22 new schools will be suspended for a week, involving 9 kindergartens, 9 primary schools, 3 middle schools and 1 special school. Among them, two teachers in the AM and PM classes of the Christian and Missionary Association Sau Mau Ping Chan Lee Wing Ching Kindergarten tested positive for the virus, and two students in each class were also infected with the virus. In Luyang Kindergarten, where two AM classes were closed earlier due to the outbreak, three more students from the K3C followingnoon class were infected.
In terms of cases, there were 10,194 new confirmed cases in Hong Kong yesterday, including 164 imported cases. The Hospital Authority announced the death of 16 more patients, aged between 47 and 99, with 10 deaths linked to COVID-19, bringing the fifth wave of the epidemic to a total of 9,544 deaths. Yesterday, a total of 15 residents and 1 staff member of 11 residential care homes for the elderly and the disabled were diagnosed with the virus. A total of regarding 96 residents and 3 staff members were required to be quarantined.
3 more public hospitals have ward burst groups
Three more wards in public hospitals have outbreaks, namely, the Severely Intellectually Disabled Male Ward of Siu Lam Hospital, the Rehabilitation Ward of the Department of Medicine and Geriatrics of Tuen Mun Hospital, and the Medical Ward of Tseung Kwan O Hospital. The relevant wards have been thoroughly disinfected and visits have been suspended.
Yesterday, 243 people were hospitalized in the New Crown Treatment Center (AWE), and the authorities had earlier pointed out that the number of hospital beds might be increased to 240 with part-time staff and full-time medical staff working overtime. He then “walked one more step to help more and fewer patients”, and revealed that the center plans to open more beds following the Mid-Autumn Festival.
