The turnover of gambling in France reached the record sum of 12.9 billion euros in 2022, an increase of 20% over one year, driven by casinos, according to data published Thursday by the National Gaming Authority (ANJ).

If the operators holding exclusive rights (La Française des Jeux and the PMU) still represent more than half of the activity, with 64% of the gross gaming revenue (GGR) with 8.2 billion euros in 2022 (+ 8% compared to 2021), the casinos experienced a growth in turnover of 130%.

Record stakes for online sports betting

This “is largely explained by the total reopening of casinos following two years of reduced activity due to the pandemic”, explains the National Gaming Authority (ANJ), while the sector has returned to its pre-crisis level, with 2.5 billion euros last year, compared to 2.4 in 2019.

On the other hand, online gambling and chance marked time with growth of 0.8%, to 2.2 billion euros, “following experiencing strong growth between 2017 and 2021 with a growth rate average annual PBJ of 18%”, recalls the ANJ. Online sports betting, however, recorded a record level of stakes thanks to the World Cup, at 1.4 billion euros (+ 2.5% compared to 2021).
