Carnage was likely narrowly averted at a Colorado amusement park where a heavily armed man armed with explosives likely preferred to kill himself rather than go ahead with a killing spree.
Staff members at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, located in Glenwood Springs, were shocked to discover the body of a 22-year-old man in the women’s restroom on Saturday morning.
“The suspect was heavily armed with a semi-automatic rifle and a semi-automatic pistol, in addition to multiple magazines for each weapon. “He was wearing a bulletproof vest and what appears to be a ballistic helmet,” the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office said Monday, adding that the suspect also wore clothing and emblems that made him look like a member of the military. ‘order.
In addition to these weapons, the man had explosives in his possession, on his person and in his vehicle. Some of the devices discovered turned out to be fake, but others were real, Sheriff Lou Vallario explained at a press conference.
“Given the amount of weapons, ammunition and explosives found, the suspect may have carried out an attack of devastating proportions on our community and first responders. […] We were extremely fortunate that he did not go ahead with whatever plan he had in mind,” said Sheriff Vallario.
The latter pointed out, stunned, that “there are many more things we don’t know than things we know.”
In all likelihood, the suspect entered the amusement park during the night, when there were no visitors or employees. However, at one point during the night, the man chose to commit suicide in the toilet.
Investigators found the inscription “I am not a killer. I just wanted to go into the cellars.” However, they were not able to confirm that these writings were indeed the work of the suspect.
The discovery of the suspect’s body came just days following the shooting in Lewiston, Maine, where a man shot and killed 18 citizens before taking his own life.
