NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell is leaving the company following an outside investigation “into a complaint of improper conduct,” its parent company Comcast announced Sunday.

NBCUniversal executive Jeff Shell has handed over the reins of the American media group following acknowledging an “inappropriate relationship” with a colleague. Announced this Sunday, the departure comes following a complaint that sparked an investigation, parent company Comcast Corp said.

“When our principles and policies are violated, we will always act quickly to take appropriate action, as we have done here,” said Cavanagh and Comcast CEO Brian Roberts. Comcast simply said that the investigation into the complaint once morest Shell had been conducted by outside counsel. He did not provide further details. This decision was made by “mutual agreement” with Jeff Shell, said Comcast – which bought NBCUniversal in 2013.

“Today is my last day as CEO of NBCUniversal. I had an inappropriate relationship with a woman from the company, which I deeply regret,” Jeff Shell said in a statement. “I am truly sorry to have let my colleagues at Comcast and NBCUniversal down, they are the most talented people in the industry and the opportunity to work with them over the past 19 years has been a privilege.” The brief statement did not specify who the woman with whom he engaged in “inappropriate conduct” was.

Already a precedent in the media group

Jeff Shell, 57, spent nearly 20 years at NBCUniversal, which he took over as CEO in 2020. The former chairman took over as CEO replacing Steve Burke. He oversaw the media company’s vast portfolio of businesses, including Universal’s film studio and television, but also Universal’s Peacock streaming service and theme parks.

Jeff Shell is the second company executive forced to resign for improper conduct in a few years. In 2020, Ron Meyer, then vice president of NBCUniversal, had to leave office following admitting to having an extramarital affair with a woman and buying her silence.

NBCUniversal is not the only American media group to have experienced such cases. Jeff Zucker, the former president of CNN, resigned in February last year for an affair with a colleague.
