PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5/AP) — The Phoenix Suns will lose a 2nd-round draft pick amid a tampering investigation into one of their newest players, according to the NBA. League officials announced on Wednesday the team violated league rules surrounding the timing of free agency discussion with then-Portland center Drew Eubanks. The pick the Suns lost was originally Denver’s and was acquired from the Orlando Magic in a previous trade. The league said the Suns cooperated with the investigation.

The NBA found during the investigation that the team was involved in the discussion with Eubanks before the permitted time period. The team posted a statement on X, formerly Twitter, accepting the pick loss but said the violation was “inadvertent.” Eubanks was signed to Phoenix on a two-year, $5 million deal in the offseason.

Eubanks made an appearance during Tuesday’s matchup once morest the Los Angeles Lakers, scoring four points and putting up three blocks. He went undrafted in 2018 but signed with the San Antonio Spurs. He was then traded to the Portland Trail Blazers in 2022 before joining the Suns this year. During his 2021-22 season with Portland, he averaged over 14 points a game and roughly eight rebounds.
