On Sunday, on the sidelines of Game 2 of the NBA Finals between the Denver Nuggets and the Miami Heat, Adam Silver, the boss of the North American pro league, spoke regarding certain projects on which the body he leads is in the process of floor. Negotiations with television channels should begin next spring. Then Silver hinted that the NBA would be interested in expanding its number of teams.
There are currently 30 franchises and the league might create two more. « (The NBA) don’t have anything specific in mind at the moment. […] But it makes sense over time”said Adam Silver, quoted on the website of Forbes. It’s been almost 20 years since the basketball league welcomed a new team (since the Charlotte Bobcats in 2004, which have since become the Hornets). The franchises that had emerged in the meantime (Oklahoma City, Brooklyn, New Orleans) had been relocated.
Seattle would find an NBA franchise
The two cities holding the line for possible expansion would be Seattle and Las Vegas. The first named already had an NBA team with the SuperSonics from 1967 to 2008. The franchise was champion in 1979 (and runner-up in 1978 and 1996), before being relocated to Oklahoma City.
Las Vegas has never seen the NBA before. But the Nevada city is on the rise in US sports: it has a WNBA team (the Aces since 2018, defending champions), another NHL team (the Golden Knights since 2017, who are currently playing in the final), one of NFL (the Raiders since 2020) and might recover the Athletics, currently in Oakland (California), in MLB.
