NBA Commissioner Adam Silver Addresses Trade Requests and Contract Honoring Concerns

During a press conference this Wednesday, Adam Silver covered recent NBA news. The commissioner notably returned to recent trade requests from several stars. A practice of which he is (still) not a fan.

For several seasons now, star movements have been increasing within the League. Anthony Davis, James Harden, Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and now Damian Lillard. All expressed their desire to leave their teams while they were under contract and almost all were successful. If these blockbuster trades bring an emotional lift to the fans, they are not necessarily appreciated on the League side.

As he has done several times in recent months, Adam Silver expressed his regret over the trade requests, explaining that he was observing the situations in Portland and Philadelphia. A nod to the Lillard and Harden files obviously.

“As for the trade requests, obviously we don’t like them. As a league, we want players and teams to honor their contracts. I am watching the situation in Portland and Philadelphia, and I hope it will be resolved to everyone’s satisfaction before the start of the season. I am glad that things seem to have calmed down somewhat, at least as far as public speeches are concerned.”

If Adam Silver is closely following these two issues, he has already proven this summer that he is not afraid to punish potential “excesses”. The NBA fined James Harden $100,000 for his comments regarding Daryl Morey. The League also sent a memo to each NBA team to remind them that a traded player might not refuse to play in their new team. A way to thwart the actions of Damian Lillard’s agent, who indicated to the franchises interested in his client that only the Heat was in Dame Dolla’s plans.

Since then, it’s been a bit of a dead calm but everything might speed up once more with the training camps fast approaching.
