Islamabad: The court ordered the return of the immovable and movable property of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, which was confiscated in 2020 in connection with the corruption case. The order was issued by Islamabad Accountability Court Judge Muhammad Bashir who heard the Toshakhana corruption case against Nawaz Sharif. Nawaz Sharif, who spent four years in exile in London, returned to Pakistan on October 21.

In 2020, the Accountability Court ordered the confiscation of his properties after the Islamabad High Court declared him as an absconder. More than 200 acres of agricultural land, Mercedes Benz car, Land Cruiser and other vehicles were confiscated from Nawaz Sharif.

The order to confiscate the properties was withdrawn in the context of the cancellation of the arrest warrant against Sharif who returned to the country. Sharif’s lawyer Misbahul Hasan Khawazi told the court that Sharif went abroad for specialist treatment with the permission of the High Court.

However, the National Accountability Bureau filed a case against him and issued a confiscation order. The Toshakhana case against Nawaz Sharif is that he bought the car by paying only 15 percent from the government prize pool. It is alleged that the car was given unfairly in 2008 despite not holding any government post.

The law requires that the goods received by the head of state from foreign countries be kept in the government gift collection. If it wants, the government can sell it through public auction. However, the law allows heads of state to keep gifts worth less than Rs.10,000.
