Nawaz Sharif got bail in Avenfield and Al-Azizia reference

After the Accountability Court of Islamabad granted bail in the Tosha Khana case, the High Court also extended the bail granted to Pakistan Muslim League (N) leader and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia reference till October 26.

A two-member special bench comprising Chief Justice Aamir Farooq and Justice Mian Gul Hasan Aurangzeb of the Islamabad High Court heard the petitions filed for reviving Nawaz Sharif’s appeal against the conviction in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia references.

Nawaz Sharif’s lawyer, Azam Nazir Tard, giving arguments, said that the accountability court has withdrawn Nawaz Sharif’s warrant in the Toshakhana case and has granted bail in exchange for the miscreants.

Chief Justice Islamabad High Court said that we have two separate petitions, both of which are related to reopening appeals against conviction and we have to issue notices on them.

Justice Mian Gul Hasan Aurangzeb said that in order to revive the petitions, it is necessary that the petitioner give the reason why he was absent from the court.

Prosecutor General NAB said that if the security bail is extended, then we have no objection, on which Justice Mian Gul Hasan Aurangzeb remarked that it is the same NAB, on which laughter was raised in the court.

The court told the prosecutor that while fulfilling the requirements of Sharia, they ask again if they want to arrest Nawaz Sharif, there is any objection to the bail extension, to which the NAB prosecutor replied that they do not want to arrest him.

The Islamabad High Court has issued a notice to the NAB on the petitions to revive the pleas against Nawaz Sharif’s sentence and adjourned it till Thursday, October 26.

The court also extended the security bail of the leader of Muslim League (N) Nawaz Sharif till Thursday.

It should be remembered that Nawaz Sharif was sentenced in 2018 in the Al-Azizia Mills and Avonfield corruption cases, in the Al-Azizia Mills reference, he was imprisoned in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail for 7 years, but after some time he was sent to London on medical grounds. Permission was granted.

Nawaz Sharif had left for London for treatment in November 2019 after ill health in jail but he has not returned to Pakistan yet while several cases against him are pending in Pakistan.

Before Nawaz Sharif’s departure to London, Shahbaz Sharif filed an application in the Lahore High Court and assured that he will return to Pakistan after 4 weeks or after his doctor confirms his recovery.

Later, in August last year, Nawaz Sharif filed an application in the Immigration Tribunal against the British Home Department’s refusal to allow him to extend his stay in the country on ‘medical grounds’.

Until the tribunal gives its decision on Nawaz Sharif’s request, Nawaz Sharif can stay legally in the UK. His passport had expired in February 2021, but he was issued a passport after the PDM coalition government was formed. was
