As I write regarding Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, “the Prince of Reconciliations” and “the Prince of Pardon,” as he was known, I remember the situations in which he had a courageous stance, and the morals that he displayed, which greatly raised his status among the people. Sheikh Nawaf was one of the most prominent men who witnessed the building of the modern State of Kuwait since its independence in 1962. He contributed to achieving its renaissance, and he moved over the course of 6 decades between many ministerial positions, including the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Defense, and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor.
Sheikh Nawaf was known for his justice in making decisions, for his generosity, and for the achievements that were made during his periods of service as a minister, and then for his assumption of the Emirate of Kuwait later, knowing that it was a short period that began in September 2020, and ended a few days ago, but – nevertheless – he succeeded. In running the country, he left a good legacy that everyone can attest to, especially since he inaugurated his era of reconciliation, which represented a new page in the history of Kuwait. For reconciliation, the deceased issued a special pardon to the opponents, turning the page on differences. Then, with his insight, he achieved cooperation between the legislative and executive authorities away from the conflict that Kuwait had suffered from for years and that negatively affected the continuity of development and renaissance projects in Kuwait.
The late Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah gained the love and trust of his people, because he had fulfilled his mission to the fullest extent, as the Kuwaitis attest, and they were the ones who found in him wisdom, patience, and long-term vision. No one in the Gulf region disagrees regarding what he provided to Kuwait in particular, and to the Gulf region, the Arab region and Islamic countries in general.
We all know how the Emir contributed to defusing many of the crises that our region witnessed, and perhaps the most important thing he ever worked on in this regard was the Gulf-Gulf reconciliation file. He worked hard to heal the rift and consolidate the bonds of brotherhood between the brothers due to his firm belief in the unity of the path and destiny of their countries, with His adherence to the principle of respecting the sovereignty of states and non-interference in their internal affairs. His efforts at that time culminated in turning the page on the dispute, and that was at the Al-Ula Saudi Summit in January 2021.
On the other hand, the deceased was wise, as he pushed his country towards achieving more renaissance, which strengthened its political status and presence within its Arab, regional and international surroundings. His role in promoting joint Arab action and his concern for international peace and security also emerged, especially with regard to Kuwait’s position towards the issue of Palestine and Jerusalem. Kuwait’s position would not have been possible without his direct guidance, as he ordered the operation of an air bridge to support Gaza with the food supplies and medicines it needed to confront what it is experiencing today, concluding with this position a long and busy life during which he experienced major issues in the history of his country and the Arab nation because of his belief that Kuwait’s strength lies in The unity of its people with each other, and in their unity with the children of the Arab people whose progress depends on their cooperation and cohesion.
“Prince Zahid,” the “Prince of Humility,” who had gotten close to the people during his period of assuming grave responsibilities in the government and then in the leadership of Kuwait, has passed away. He was keen to meet their needs and support them, and was a model of embodying authentic values.
There is no doubt that we feel the grief of our brothers over their loss, recognizing that with his passing we have lost a loyal man. But at the same time, we look forward to his successor, His Highness the Emir Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, and we are certain that he will continue the path of the rulers of Kuwait who preceded him, a path for which we bear all the love for Kuwait whose stances, openness, and eagerness to support brothers and friends in times of adversity will never be forgotten by the Arabs.
